International Museum Day has been celebrated on the 18th of May since the year 1977. The idea of the Day is to make the social position of museums known, both among the public and the decision-makers. The Advisory Council of ICOM is responsible for the Day’s theme, and in Finland the Finnish Museums Association is responsible for the coordination of Museum Day. Nowadays almost 30 000 museums in more than 120 countries all over the world participate in the different events of Museum Day’s celebrations.
